The Leadership Workout

A sampling of key areas for growth and development
Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 3
SELF-AWARENESS

Enlightened leadership starts by strengthening the skill of accurate self-observation, the essential ingredient for increasing self-awareness. Learning to observe your behavior objectively builds self-awareness and forms the foundation for emotional intelligence.

Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 4
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

As you build the skill of self-observation, you will develop the ability to accurately identify your habitual emotional reactions, track the situations or people that trigger them, and learn to step back, detach, and self-regulate.

Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 5
STRESS MANAGEMENT

“It’s not the stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it” (Hans Selye). Selye coined the term “stressor” to distinguish the triggering event.

No one is immune to stress. It can elevate your performance or overwhelm and debilitate you. Learning to manage your automatic emotional and physical reactions will prepare you to handle stressors, threats and events, and quickly reestablish equilibrium.

Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 6
DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING

Once “stress triggers” are identified, practicing Diaphragmatic Breathing is one of the most effective ways to bring the body back to a state of rest, or homeostasis, which is essential for well-being and strategic thinking.

Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 7
STRATEGIC THINKING

The first step to sharpen strategic thinking is to learn how to observe and regulate your automatic thoughts, habitual self-talk and inner dialogue.

Through awareness and purposeful control of these thoughts, you will become more deliberate and strategic about your inner dialogue and subsequent behavior, which will impact interpersonal dynamics and influence leadership capacity and authority.

Jane D. Zimmerman, Ph.D. - Field 7
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

The ability to manage conflict and defuse tension is a vital leadership skill that creates a safe, positive, and productive workplace.

Leaders who recognize and regulate their own emotions and understand the feelings and perspectives of others--even when they don’t share them--demonstrate the emotional intelligence needed to effectively manage conflict.

Understanding your primary conflict style is an essential first step. It allows you to develop competence in other conflict-handling styles, and provides the flexibility needed to assess each situation and choose the most effective approach. This enables you to steer conflict in the direction that best serves the circumstances, and supports strong outcomes for individuals and teams.

BUILDING HIGH-PERFORMING INTEGRATED TEAMS

The ability to build high-performing teams is an essential leadership competency for achieving sustainable results.

The key is to engage, empower, and align team members so they can leverage each other’s strengths while minimizing unproductive efforts.

Teams that share a clear and common purpose, foster strong collaboration, and follow effective work processes are best positioned to thrive and to succeed more quickly in today’s complex and rapidly changing environment.

EXECUTIVE PRESENCE

Executive presence is
the ability to earn trust,
inspire confidence, and
command respect.

By speaking with focus and purpose, delivering clear and concise messages, and communicating with credibility and authenticity, leaders can articulate a compelling vision grounded in facts, real-life examples, and relatable stories.

This approach enables leaders to build meaningful connections, deepen engagement, and strengthen their influence, enthusiasm, and the trust of others.
